Prices Go Through Roof On Old Belsnickle Santas

Dating from the late 1800s to the early 1900s, thesestern-looking St. Nicholas figures are made of molded papier-mache.Sometimes plaster-coated, they are at the top of the price scale onChristmas collectibles.

Called belsnickle Santas (from the German "Pelze Nicol"), theyare very different from the American concept of Santa as fat andjolly. Thin and often stooped, belsnickle Santas are hooded.
