Need help? Just knock on Sister Carol's door.

There are no flowers or lush green parks for children to play. There is no public swimming pool. But there is a river, where teenagers gather - to do tik. The Blomvlei River flows through Hanover Park, a concrete slab of a desolate Cape Town suburb off Lansdowne Road.

This is where I meet the gentle-voiced Carol van Wyk, known as "Sister Carol", a modern disciple and guardian angel. At 17 she was a Sunday school teacher. Her first and only job was as a machinist in a factory for 20 years, until she had "a calling", which literally knocked on her front door on New Year's Eve, five years ago.
